Four Pears & one Apple Tree

My friend Robert visited Jetty Farm today and has transformed our trees with his super impressive Grafting expertise. A beautiful sunny day too!!

We were kept company by the farm chooks at our feet ever alert to insect activity in the wake of our frenzy of pruning and raking ( Elise and I learnt to prune...we loved it! Elaine & Aza were exceptional rakers, compost builders and tea makers).

Thanks to Mark from MclarenVale for the cuttings we now have (grafted onto our existing trees) Pink Lady, Red Delicious & Golden Delicious Apples and four pear varieties on our second Granny Smith Apple tree.

Lovely day!

This Farm grows BIG Parsnips

The most common advice we've been given since on the Farm is not to get caught up in trying to achieving too much in our first year....oh how easy it is to just dive in and plant every spare garden bed.

"Take the time to get to know your patch, the water flows and micro climate,  what weeds grow where, which way the wind blows and so on...or you'll find yourself just working against it...make notes, take photos...just watch" Thankyou our experienced grower friends and mentors we're so glad you told us this xx

Still, we managed to plant Sugar Snap Peas in the wettest part of the vegie garden and now read (and can see too) that they rot easily.  Then the French Onions were planted where the garden gets no winter sun...

BUT we've made a BIG note in the farm log. This farm grows big Parsnips!! Actually we just realised they need picking NOW.

So the Farms' notable contribution to the Grocer is this week... Parsnips!!!
